Helping the Wheel Spin True
One of humanity's greatest engineering achievements is the humble bicycle wheel.
Think about it. A bicycle wheel weighs very little. Its spokes are no thicker than a strand of spaghetti. Yet together they support your body weight, absorb bumps, transmit enormous forces from every pedal stroke, and remain incredibly durable.
How? Not because the spokes are individually strong. Because they're held in exactly the right relationship to one another.
The magic isn't strength. It's length and tension.
A Marvel of Engineering
If you've ever watched someone build — or true — a bicycle wheel, it's mesmerizing.
They don't crank every spoke tighter. They don't replace the entire wheel.
Instead, they spin the wheel. Watch carefully. Notice the slightest wobble. Then make an incredibly small adjustment.
A quarter turn tighter. An eighth turn looser. Spin it again. Another tiny adjustment. Spin it again.
Eventually the wobble disappears. The wheel spins beautifully true.
Your Body Works the Same Way
The human body is remarkably similar.
Movement isn't simply about strength. Or flexibility. It's about relationships.
Every muscle has an ideal working length. Every joint has an ideal role. Every tissue shares load with the structures around it.
When those relationships are balanced, movement feels smooth, efficient, and resilient.
Life Pulls Us Out of True
Very few people wake up one morning with back pain for no reason. Usually there's a story.
You rolled an ankle. You tore a meniscus. You spent years sitting at a desk. You carried your toddler on the same hip. You recovered from surgery.
None of those events necessarily break the system. They simply pull it a little out of true.
The remarkable thing about the body is that it keeps going anyway. It compensates. It adapts. It finds another way.
For a while.
The Cost of Compensation
Have you ever ridden a bicycle with a badly out-of-true wheel?
It still rolls. But it wobbles. Maybe it rubs the brake pads. Maybe it vibrates at speed. Maybe it simply feels inefficient.
Every revolution repeats the same imperfection.
The human body behaves similarly. Every step. Every golf swing. Every ski turn. Every lift.
If something in the system is contributing to uneven tension, movement, or load tolerance, that tiny wobble gets repeated over and over again.
Eventually the body asks for your attention.
The Greatest Delta
During an assessment, I'm not searching for perfect posture or perfect symmetry.
I'm looking for the Greatest Delta — the largest meaningful difference between one side of the body and the other.
Sometimes it's hip mobility. Sometimes it's shoulder motion. Sometimes it's balance. Sometimes it's breathing.
Those asymmetries often provide the strongest clue about where to investigate first.
Just as a skilled wheel builder knows which spoke to adjust — and which ones to leave alone — I want to identify the highest-leverage place to begin.
We Don't Chase Pain
One of the biggest misconceptions in fitness and rehabilitation is that the painful area is the problem.
Often, it isn't. Pain is information. Not necessarily the source.
If your low back hurts, I don't immediately assume your low back needs fixing. Instead, I ask: Why is it working so hard?
What elsewhere in the system may be contributing to uneven tension, movement, or load tolerance?
Sometimes the answer is the hips. Sometimes the thoracic spine. Sometimes the feet. Sometimes breathing. Sometimes something entirely unexpected.
Helping the Wheel Spin True
My goal isn't to make every muscle stronger. Or every joint more mobile. It's to help the entire system work together more efficiently.
Sometimes that requires building strength. Sometimes restoring mobility. Sometimes improving balance. Sometimes simply making one small adjustment in exactly the right place.
Like truing a bicycle wheel, remarkable change often comes from subtle, thoughtful adjustments — not dramatic ones.
The body doesn't need perfection. It needs balance.
And when the wheel spins true, everything downstream becomes easier. Movement feels smoother. Performance improves. Pain often decreases.
And you become more resilient — not just for your next workout, but for the decades ahead.
