Why Golfers Get Low Back Pain

It's rarely because your back is weak — more often it's doing someone else's job.

It's rarely because your back is weak. More often, it's because your back is doing someone else's job.

If you've ever noticed your low back getting sore after a bucket of balls — or after your first round of the season — you're in good company.

Low back discomfort is one of the most common complaints among recreational golfers.

The surprising part? The answer usually isn't strengthening your back or stretching it more.

It's understanding how your body was designed to move.

Every Joint Has a Job

One of the foundational principles we use at FranklyFitness is called the Joint-by-Joint Approach.

Every joint in your body has a primary responsibility. Some joints are designed primarily for mobility. Others are designed primarily for stability.

Working from the ground up, the body alternates remarkably well between the two.

  • Ankles need mobility.
  • Knees need stability.
  • Hips need mobility.
  • Lumbar spine needs stability.
  • Thoracic spine needs mobility.

When every joint performs its intended role, movement becomes efficient. When one joint loses its ability to do its job, another often has to compensate.

The Golf Swing Doesn't Care Where the Rotation Comes From

Your golf club has one job. Get back to the ball.

If your hips rotate well and your thoracic spine rotates well, they generate most of the rotation your swing needs. Your lumbar spine simply transfers force between your lower and upper body.

But if your hips become stiff, or your thoracic spine loses mobility, your body still has to complete the swing. It simply finds rotation somewhere else.

Unfortunately, that's often your lower back.

Your Low Back Was Designed to Be Stable

This surprises many golfers. Although the lumbar spine contains five large vertebrae, it contributes relatively little rotational movement.

Instead, it's designed to:

  • Transfer force
  • Resist excessive motion
  • Protect the spine
  • Create a stable foundation

Think of your low back as the chassis connecting your lower and upper body. Its job is to remain stable enough for force generated through the ground, legs, and hips to transfer efficiently into the torso, arms, and club—not to become the primary source of rotation.

Small Asymmetries Become Big Problems

A rolled ankle. A stiff hip. A previous shoulder injury. Years sitting at a desk.

None of these necessarily "break" the body. But they can gradually change how forces move through it.

Over time, something in the system may be contributing to uneven tension, movement, or load tolerance.

Golf exposes these issues because it asks your body to repeat the same movement hundreds of times. What feels insignificant during daily life often becomes obvious after a bucket of balls.

The Greatest Delta

One of the first things I look for during an assessment isn't perfection.

I'm looking for what I call the Greatest Delta — the largest meaningful difference between the right and left sides of your body.

That difference may involve:

  • Mobility
  • Stability
  • Balance
  • Strength
  • Coordination
  • Movement quality

Large asymmetries don't guarantee pain. But they often make movement less efficient. And inefficient movement repeated hundreds or thousands of times eventually catches up with us.

Train the System, Not the Symptom

If your goal is to play more golf with less back pain, it can be tempting to focus only on the area that hurts.

But the lower back is often doing exactly what it's been asked to do: compensate.

Instead of chasing symptoms, start by improving the quality of the system. That means building the foundation first:

  • Hip mobility
  • Thoracic rotation
  • Core stability
  • Glute function
  • Scapular control
  • Balance
  • Efficient movement patterns

Once those pieces begin working together, strength training becomes even more effective because you're building on a body that's moving well rather than reinforcing compensation.

Whether you're a golfer looking to play pain-free, a skier preparing for winter, or simply someone who wants to stay active for decades to come, the principles are the same.

Move well first.

Strength comes next.

Power follows.

Longevity is the result.
